I’m guessing you’re in one of these two groups:
- You type by hunting and pecking, and you want to learn touch typing.
- You already touch type on QWERTY and want to switch.
Basics of Touch Typing
If you’re new to touch typing (like not knowing which finger goes where), start with The Typing Cat.
It lets you practice Colemak using your regular QWERTY keyboard. That’s why I like it more than Typing Club, which also has a Colemak course but doesn’t let you emulate the keyboard.
You can also check out Colemak.academy, which has keyboard emulation too.
This should take you at most an hour before moving on to the next step.
Beginner / Switching from Qwerty
If you already have some idea about touch typing, you can jump onto Keybr. It supports all the Colemak layouts.
Best Method- Tarmak
Tarmak is the best way to switch to Colemak, whether you know how to touch type or not.
It changes a few keys at a time, so you don’t have to learn everything all at once. Each stage feels natural, making the switch easier and less frustrating.
Install Tarmak and use it when you're not practicing on Keybr or any touch typing site.
How I Do It
I practice 5-10 minutes on Typing Cat, then 25 minutes on Keybr throughout the day, and use Tarmak on my computers.
My Tarmak Timeline
- Tarmak 1: 16/01/25 (3 days)
- Tarmak 2: 19/01/25 - ongoing
I've also kept a printout of Colemak Vanilla (this) on my desk.
Once I reach 60 WPM, I'll keep improving using the touch typing guide I’ve written here.
I might switch to Colemak DH if it made sense to me, but that’s something for later.
Here’s my Keybr profile.
Hope this helps!
